Under Fifty-Five
Under Fifty-Five
Why do we have a page on our website for Under 55 in a ministry focused on those in life's second half?
Because you bring SO MUCH to the table, and we were not created to live in generational isolation.
When you associate with people over 55, you benefit from their life experience. No, it's not always cool to hang out with the 'older folk', and you'll want to spend lots of time with your peers. But we know God is pleased when the younger reach out to the older, and vice versa. Just read the last verse in the Old Testament:
Chances are, those leading your older adult groups don't have you on their radar as a potential leader or vital partner in second-half adult ministry. But, we know it worked back in the New Testament days, and the Church made pretty good progress back then! Paul the older asked Titus the younger to teach older men and women---so that they, in turn, could influence younger generations.
We're not just building a bridge from older to younger. It's a bridge with two-way traffic, and we need your help constructing it!
If you have an interest in older adult ministry, spend thirteen minutes with Dr. Amy Hanson. She's now in her late forties but got started down this path as a teenager.
You'll also want to connect with the Fuller Youth Institute, and check out their resources on Sticky Faith and Growing Young. Do you realize how vital seasoned, mature Christians could be in the sustained faith of you and your young friends? It's not just a nice idea---it's essential!
And do you realize what an energizing voice you can be in the lives of older adults? Many teeter on the edge of commitment and surmise that their serving days are over. They need to know they are still valued and valuable. This John Piper video clip from the turn of this century will get you fired up on understanding how we cannot settle for wasting our remaining years here on earth.
We'd love to help nurture that spark within you and help you navigate into a meaningful role with older adults. Please let us know how we can help you. And we might have a few ideas on how you could potentially help YES!
